TablaYoga classes are based on traditional hatha yoga practices, with the addition of tabla drumming accompaniment by the instructor. A typical class will incorporate mindful awareness, asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and savasana. Each class is a complete practice. The instructor sits in front of the class and plays traditional Indian talas(rhythmic cycles) during what is called a ‘vinyasa’- a series of flowing postures, which is then followed by any number of asanas for therapeutic and rejuvenative effects. The idea behind combining tabla drumming and hatha yoga is simple: a meditative groove is established, allowing one to more easily drop into the fluid body. From here, stagnant energy is moved along and healing energy takes its place. The science of this practice is designed to open the energetic pathways in the body, illuminating unconscious and physically blocked areas.
